Junior Researchers (2 positions)

The organisation
The institute of Healthcare Policy and Management (iBMG) constitutes a separate cluster of the Erasmus University Medical Centre, with 550 students and 120 employees. The institute offers several study programs for policy and management functions on health care. The research of the institute is concerned with the broadly defined area of policy and management issues in health care, at the level of care primary processes of care, within and between healthcare organisations, and at sectoral, national and international levels. The study and research programs of the institute are characterized by their multidisciplinarity. The institute is comprised of 6 (more or less disciplinary organized departments): Health Law, Health Economics, Social Insurances, Healthcare Management, Health Services Research and Healthcare Governance. The two positions offered are within the departments of Healthcare Management and Healthcare Governance.

Research project
In order to facilitate innovation and quality improvement in care for the elderly, home care, care for the handicapped and for long-term mental healthcare, the Dutch ministry of Health initiated a large quality collaborative called Care for Better. This quality improvement collaborative is connected to a larger policy trend of developing quality collaboratives for the various care sectors in the Netherlands (e.g. Better Faster for hospital care and Prevention Better for preventive medicine). The iBMG is evaluating this collaborative improvement program, both in terms of capturing what the program actually is and does and in terms of its (cost-)effectiveness. To strengthen our research team we are scouting for two junior researchers.

- Position 1 Evaluating quality improvement in mental healthcare -

Description of the position
Recently the Care for Better collaborative has been opened for organisations from long-term mental healthcare. For this sector, four new rounds of Breakthrough projects will be offered. These projects will be evaluated by the iBMG. For this extension of our existing evaluation of the collaborative, we are scouting for a junior researcher who will be part of the research team and who will be collaborating with the quantitative and qualitative researchers in this large-scale evaluation.

The research consists of a process- and an outcome evaluation in which quantitative and qualitative methods are brought together. As a junior researcher you contribute to gathering and analyzing data on care organizations and clients, analyzing the costs and effects of the program and the mechanisms that contribute to the effectiveness of the collaborative. Besides that you will be involved in teaching activities within the bachelor Health Sciences and in the master Healthcare Management.

Requirements
The successful applicant for this position is expected to have a master degree in a relevant field like Health Sciences or other humanities like business, economics, sociology or psychology. Further s/he should have good writing skills, and a strong motivation for doing scholarly research in the field of healthcare innovation. The candidates with strong skills and experience with doing empirical research, quantitative research methods and analysis techniques are preferred. Good command of Dutch language is an asset.

Appointment and salary
Initially the position is a temporary appointment, for the duration of one year. This will be prolonged to a four year Ph.D. trajectory if the applicant performs well. We offer a position as a junior researcher (scale 10 of the Collective Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centres with a maximum of € 3638 per month). The position is fulltime, but part-time positions (with a minimum of 0,8) can be considered.

- Position 2 Evaluating integrated development and implementation of innovations in care for the elderly -

Description of the position
Recently the Care for Better collaborative has been extended with a program for developing and introducing innovations in care for the elderly. This extension focuses on the integration of the development of instruments to support working with ‘norms for responsible care’ in elderly care and their dissemination through the existing Care for Better quality improvement collaborative. Where quality improvement collaboratives are generally seen as a means to spread evidence-based practices quickly across care organizations this approach is here combined with an innovative approach of the development of instruments, pre-implementation testing, and general diffusion. It thereby tries to combine the spread of innovations for elderly care with an approach of ‘experience-based design’.

This extension of the collaborative will be evaluated by the iBMG.

We are mainly interested in the process, outcome and theoretical consequences for ‘diffusion theory’ of this approach of ‘experience-based design’ in healthcare innovation. As a junior researcher you contribute to observing and analyzing the innovation initiatives, the initiatives for spreading innovations and the relations between these two activities with the aim of analyzing the mechanisms that lead to the successful introduction of innovations in care practices. Besides that you will be involved in teaching activities within the bachelor Health Sciences and in the master Healthcare Management or Health Economics, Policy and Law.

Requirements
The successful applicant for this position is expected to have a master degree in a relevant field like Science and Technology Studies, Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, Health Sciences, Design Studies or (qualitative) Sociology. Further s/he should have good writing skills, and a strong motivation for doing scholarly research in the field of healthcare innovation. Candidates with strong skills and experience with doing empirical research, qualitative research methods like ethnography and interviewing are preferred. Candidates should have excellent skills in English and good command of Dutch language.
